Subliminal Messaging Explained
Posted by Greg Frost at Oct 26th, 2008 in Personal Development
Many people do not really understand the concept of subliminal messaging, and it’s understandable considering how it’s not a widely known phenomenon. So what exactly is subliminal messaging? It is a technique whereby messages are conveyed to the subconscious, rather than through the conventional consciousness.
Subliminal messaging is a technique whereby messages are transmitted to the subconscious, rather than to the conscious mind. These messages – be it in the form of print, audio, or video – are designed in such a manner that a person is unaware of their presence, because they fall below a person’s normal aural threshold.
They are usually embedded into some form of media; images are shown quicker than the eye can see, sounds are played at a frequency which no normal human hearing can consciously detect. Yet even though we may not be able to process these subliminal information on a conscious level, our subconscious are in fact capable of deciphering and processing these hidden information.
Subliminal messaging is everywhere. Yet because of everything that is physically happening around us, our minds automatically shut out the unnecessary information and treat them as “background noise”. We are aware of them however, just on a far lower level than what our conscious mind makes us focus on.
Let’s take for example someone (who we shall refer to as John) at a party. The party’s in full swing, the room’s crowded, and John is mingling and having a drink with friends, just kicking back and chilling. Then just several feet away, he hears someone mention his name in a conversation, and immediately he tunes into the conversation. This goes to show that John’s subconscious has been aware of the conversation all along, but only when his name was called did he become consciously aware of it.
The same concept applies to subliminal messaging. Even though you may not be aware of the messages that you’re receiving, your mind is still processing them and deciphering the information. In the case of subliminal affirmations, words, even on a conscious level, have the power to influence people. Words are in fact a very strong element in influencing people. Therefore it is very possible to influence the behavior of an individual or even a group without their knowledge.
But just like anything in life, subliminal messaging can be used for either good or bad purposes. While there may be some conspiracy theorists who claim that subliminal messaging is “evil” in the sense that it can manipulate one’s actions (by either making consumers purchase a particular brand or making voters vote a certain politician through subliminal ad campaigns), subliminal messaging can in fact be used for good. Many people are realizing that self-help subliminal audios can be beneficial to them, and with an industry that is valued around $50 million today, it shows that people do have faith in subliminal messaging. They are using subliminal messaging to unlock their true potential and improve the quality of their lives.
So you see, subliminal messaging isn’t all that bad. All it does is activate the parts of your brain that you aren’t consciously using, and unlock the full potential of your mind to your advantage.
