Have you ever noticed how much Americans like to talk? They love to talk, they love to be talked to with their televisions and radios and computers constantly talking, talking, talking. They seem to delegate silence or stillness with those few get back to nature days (and even then, I noticed a kid with a GameBoy the last time I was in the park). There seems to be a fear of silence especially when we’re conversing. The spaces in between words feel awkward to us. Someone HAS to be talking or we’re simply not communicating effectively (or so it seems). And the worst is in sales, when we’ve got the product or service sold, and somehow we can’t keep our mouths shut and therefore ruin our chances in some cases.

Future Hope

by Kenrick Cleveland

“If you want to build a ship, don’t herd people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupery

If you’ve been paying attention at all to the news, you’ve likely noticed that there are lots and lots of things to worry about — from man made disasters such as the deficit, antibiotic resistant viruses, crumbling housing market, weak dollar, extinction of polar bears, to the acts of nature such as tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, et cetera. I could go on, but I’ve decided to make a very conscious decision to nurture the beautiful things in life and positively impact the present.

The Art of Gratitude

by Kenrick Cleveland

“It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” -Wallace D. Wattles, The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” -Melodie Beattie

What Happens When You Refuse to Persuade

by Kenrick Cleveland

“No oppression is so heavy or lasting as that which is inflicted by the perversion and exorbitance of legal authority.” –Joseph Addison

Freedom. We all love it. It’s what our country was founded upon. However, I doubt the Founding Fathers ever believed freedom would be a spectator sport and something that politicians would use for their political gain.

Inoculating Yourself Against Rejection

by Kenrick Cleveland

Do you remember going to the doctor as a child and having your inoculations? You know, those painful shots that prevented all sorts of dangerous diseases? Well, as adults, we know why the shots were necessary, but as children it just didn’t matter at all because all we knew was, it was scary and it hurt.

The inoculation I want to talk about today has nothing to do with disease prevention and could result in your sales skyrocketing (which, to me, is quite the opposite of painful). This is an inoculation against objections and it is potent medicine for any sales ailments you may have.

The Art of Drinking from A Fire Hose

by Kenrick Cleveland

Every year around this time, I start a new cycle of classes and as usual, I’ve got some eager, excited, anticipating students, many of whom will (I can already tell) work themselves into a bit of a frenzy wanting to soak up as much persuasion as possible in a short period of time. As one client put it, “I kind of feel like I’m drinking water out of a fire hose.”

Stop! Take a deep breath. . . now let it go.

Persuasion is a process, just as living is a process.

Persuasion And Your Brain

by Kenrick Cleveland

“The existence of forgetting has never been proved: We only know that some things don’t come to mind when we want them.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

We’ve all had that annoying, frustrating feeling (which can also be sometimes embarrassing), having something at the tip of your tongue, something that you, at one time, absolutely knew, but no longer have access to. It could be a historical fact, a personal anniversary (which might have the added bonus of putting you in the doghouse) or it could be something as crucial as the name of a valued client who you’ve had many interactions with, but are drawing a total blank on. (I hate it when that happens!!!).

Binds in Buying

by Kenrick Cleveland

The strategy of binding is fascinating as it relates to persuasion and is something that should be used sparingly.

Binds are language patterns that figuratively bind your prospect or client to do as you wish them to do. (Can you see why this should be used sparingly and with the utmost integrity?) Like all language patterns, there’s a formula to it.

Single binds have two formulas. Formula one is ‘if X, Y’. Formula two is ‘the more you X, the more you Y.’
